Another busy week at the club, thankfully all the greens are now spiked, sanded and ironed, and seemingly putting well. All eyes will be on France next week with the start of the Ryder Cup, it looks like a real challenge to get a win against a very strong USA team. Enjoy this week’s newsletter!

Stableford round-up

Gary Hague won Division One on 44pts and had two twos, the man is back on form! In Division Two, Dave Hall (pictured) won with an incredible 48pts. The cored greens sorted out David’s wonky putting according to Stuart Mcnee. Division Three was won by David Mould with another high score of 44pts.

PGA playing ability test

Liam Spencer, our young green keeper and potential professional, has just passed his playing ability test and he is now eligible to embark on the path to becoming a PGA professional.

Credit to Leyon who took the day off to caddie for him and guide him round.

Add more punch to your game!

Just a round-up on my boxing and I will give you a rest from it after today. Garry performed better than I hoped and won with ease, it helped the cause to have my friend and former British Commonwealth and world Champion Tony Oakey on the spit bucket!

On a theme that will help many of you and draw a parallel with golf, one of the main problems I had with Garry at the start was he procrastinated, and over thought his actions. Something you may see in the video is that he dished out the leather shampoo for six rounds.

For example your pre-shot routine is far more important than you think, to stand there too long over your shot in your address position can be disastrous. My advice is to find a routine and stick to it.

The pre-shot drill should include one practice swing, a technique for alignment, and some sort of waggle then starts your swing. This should all be done exactly the same for every shot and if you can’t find the correct way for you, then come and see me.

Key features at Le Golf National

For the first time in the history of The Ryder Cup, the tournament will be being held in France at Le Golf National. Opened in 1990, the course has a reputation for being one of the most demanding on the European Tour. We take a look at some of the key features of the par 72, 7,331 yard course which could prove pivotal in the quest for victory.

Water – it’s everywhere

The first thing you’ll notice when you’re watching The Ryder Cup this year is how much water is on the course. It’s there for a reason, the clay silt of the Parisian basin means that without the man-made lakes the course would be extremely boggy and muddy after rain. It makes numerous appearances throughout, featuring on no fewer than 10 holes, including three of the last four. This will make players on both sides think about club choice, with a driver off the tee not being the most sensible solution on most occasions.

The 18th

We just mentioned how tough the last four holes are and it doesn’t get any tougher than the intimidating 18th. You’ll need a long and accurate tee shot to allow yourself a short club into the island green. Too far left and you’ll be in the drink, but stray to the right and you’ll find yourself in some seriously thick rough. It’s a serious test under any circumstance, factor in the tension which The Ryder Cup brings and it turns into an absolute monster of a hole.

Pressure putts

With the Ryder Cup coming up next week, we can expect plenty of tense moments, particularly on the greens. You’ll probably notice that players on both sides will have the ability to hole out under huge amounts of pressure – who can forget Ian Poulter’s clutch putt on the 16th green at Medinah in 2012?
